Our association
Medicines UK is the representative trade body of the off-patent sector. Generic and biosimilar medicines fulfil 85% of all NHS patient prescriptions. We have 45 members that make up our association and contribute to industry discussions, helping shape policy, raise awareness and educate partners on the critical importance of the off-patent sector in running a safe and sustainable NHS.
Our vision, mission and purpose
Our vision is to create a healthier future for UK off-patent medicine manufacturers, contributing to global economic growth by broadening access to cost-effective medicines, improving supply chains and delivering value to the NHS.
Our mission is to unite and empower the industry, advocating for patient access while providing members with the resources and support they need to thrive.
Our purpose is to ensure a sustainable supply of cost-effective generic and biosimilar medicines to UK patients, maintaining consistent and reliable access to essential treatments that save and improve lives.
Our work
We work to improve the business environment of our members and sustain an attractive and competitive UK medicines market: this in turn keeps prices affordable for the NHS and widens medicines accessibility.
We represent our members' views to the UK government, devolved administrations, the NHS, parliamentarians, NICE and other regulators, as well as consult with a range of other stakeholders relevant to the supply of medicines.
Our members supply nearly 90% of the generic medicines by volume and support a turnover of £4 billion. More than four out of five medicines prescribed under the NHS are off-patent. Our members directly employ nearly 7,500 people and support a further 18,500 jobs in the supply chain.
